‘Maybe I didn't make the finals this year, but looking back, I'm satisfied with my G1. I'm glad I could close out my campaign with a win. I wasn't successful, but I've been able to set myself up for the future, and I'm happy about that. This year set me up for next. Thank you.’
-- Your first G1 after so long away- did things feel different tonight?
‘Well, my chances of getting into the final were pretty low tonight but I didn't give up until the very end. I think I performed to the best of my ability.’
-- The win over Tanahashi has to be the biggest of your campaign.
‘To beat Tanahashi, in the main event in my hometown, that was just a phenomenal experience.’
-- You said that this would be an explosive G1.
‘I can only do what I can do. I think I lived up to my own expectations, but how explosive I was is up to the fans to decide.’
-- Was it tough to be on such a demanding tour after your time away?
‘it was very demanding. I think New Japan has changed since I've been away. It's completely different to how it was even two years ago. It felt like going somewhere new for the first time. But I'm not as tired as I thought I would be. I want to keep going. I had a hell of a lot of fun!’
-- And will you be back in NJPW?
‘I don't know how the fans feel, but if I get the chance, I want to come back. I kind of think I justified getting another chance.’
-- You bowed to the four corners after your match.
‘It was to say “thank you”. For the G1, and thank you to the fans for their support.’
