BIOGRAPHY

Trained by pro wrestling legends Genichiro Tenryu and Riki Choshu, Ishii is renowned for his dogged determination and toughness. Known in NJPW as a no-nonsense workhorse able to produce amazing matches night after night, he takes the brunt of any opponent’s attacks head-on and returns the favor in kind. His short stature belies his explosive strength, which he uses to inflict brutal chops and head butts.

Introduced to NJPW by his mentor Choshu, Ishii wrestled for a time as a junior heavyweight as one of the “Four Black Saints”, before fighting larger and larger opponents first in GBH and then CHAOS. It was in 2013 that Ishii finally exploded into worldwide notoriety when he found a kindred spirit and rival in Katsuyori Shibata. Their matchups during the G1 Climax were brutal affairs that gained attention the world over.

In February 2014, Ishii started the first of his four NEVER Openweight Championship reigns. His vicious and hard hitting style instantly lent character to the NEVER championship matches and came to define it as a separate division; one not for the faint hearted. Now popular worldwide, Ishii found promotions calling him all over the world, a call that saw him go to the UK and capture the RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship twice in 2018.

In 2019, he would have a series of hard hitting matches with Taichi, a feud that resulted in his fifth NEVER Openweight Championship reign at Dominion. In the final of the G1 Climax 29, he was the unfortunate victim of KENTA’s duplicity and was left to fend for himself when KENTA refused to tag into the match. As popular abroad as in Japan, Ishii’s gruff and no-nonsense personality is reflected by his take no prisoners attitude in the ring.
